Fall Fishing in Steinhatchee

Some would think that as the cooler weather approaches fishing season would be over, but the bite is just getting started. The fall season is one of the best times for fishing because the crowds die down, but the fish aren’t going anywhere. Every angler and

fisherman know that cooler water temperatures means that the action inshore is just heating up. The fish begin to stock up and feed more aggressively as they prepare for the upcoming winter season. The best time to go fishing in the fall is during the early morning or late afternoon. These times of the day make the water temperatures warm up bringing the big game fish closer inshore and much easier to catch.

What’s Biting?

You can expect to find spotted sea trout, red fish, blue fish, and Spanish mackerel that will all gather to the flats and shallows in the most beautiful crystal-clear water near the Steinhatchee area. Offshore grouper, kingfish, and black seabass will also begin to pick up as the cooler temperatures arise. One of the most popular fish in Florida is the spotted sea trout. Towards the later fall months, when the water has really cooled down, the spotted sea trout is especially bountiful. They will also bite at almost any bait, so you’re sure to come out a winner on the water.

Inshore Boating

To navigate the shallow inshore waters, be smart when choosing your boat. You will want to select a small center console boat with a shallow draft. Ideally, the inshore bay boat will range from 18-24 feet LOA with casting deck features. Bay boats, runabouts, and pontoons are easily maintained and specifically designed for inshore fishing to manage the protected waters of bays, waterways, and backwaters. They are also used for cruising on the local waters with family and friends. Some of the most popular inshore boating brands include Pathfinder, Carolina Skiff, Edgewater, and Cobia.

What to wear

Like any other outdoor activity, comfort is key when it comes to your clothing choices. You will want clothes that will allow full range of motion and that also protect you from the elements. Remember, although it is fall, we are still in Florida, meaning you don’t want to forget your sunscreen. Clothing choices should include a base thin t-shirt, a long sleeve shirt made of nylon (this will keep you cool), shorts, shoes or sandals, a wide brimmed hat, and polarized sunglasses. The best polarized sunglasses for inshore fishing will have green or amber lenses.
