Kayaking Laws and Regulations in Florida

Before you head out on the water, be sure to brush up on the state and local laws and regulations that affect kayakers. In Florida, all non-motor-powered kayaks are exempt from registration and from boating education identification requirements. There is no minimum age requirement to go out clear boat kayaking. Boating under the influence laws do apply.

Florida requires one life jacket on board per person, and all children under six are required to wear a USCG-approved Type I, II, or III PFD. If you plan to go out kayaking before sunrise or after sunset, you’ll need at least a flashlight or a lantern. You must also have a sounding device any time of the day.
